The Peñas Llanas viewpoint, located in Riaza, has been awarded the prestigious “Otilio García” architecture prize for its innovative, sustainable and outstanding approach to the use of galvanized steel. Let me summarize the key aspects of this project:
Context and Challenge:
The Natural Heritage Foundation proposed the refurbishment of the old Peñas Llanas viewpoint, which was in a poor state and with complicated access.
The objective was to create a space from which visitors could contemplate the impressive landscape of the Sierra de Ayllón.
Design and Construction:
The project, entitled “Por las ramas”, was conceived by Antonio López Díaz and his daughters Ana and Carmen.
After Antonio’s death during the construction work, his daughters carried out the completion of the project.
The renovation was completed in June 2021 with a budget of 320,000 euros.
Features of the Mirador:
The lookout consists of two observatories:
To the west, it offers an amazing view of Riaza.
To the east, it extends in a straight line over a steep slope, with the platform flying free 10 meters above the void.
To access the viewpoint, an elevated platform-path was arranged over the terrain, allowing observation of nature without disturbing it.
