With the title “Rethinking exhibitions of women artists”, the association Mujeres en las Artes Visuales (MAV)(Women in the Visual Arts) held yesterday, October 25, at the cultural center La Nau in Valencia, in collaboration with the Vice-Rectorate for Culture and Society of the University, the first cycle of debates whose objective is to share opinions and experiences of artists and professionals of the sector on the best way to make public the work of women artists and achieve a better balance in the exhibition program of museums and art centers.

The organizers explain that: “It is an essential debate in the current moment of greater recognition of the talent of women artists with relevant solo and group exhibitions, but also of the persistence of notorious gender imbalances -of the 10 solo exhibitions programmed by Abierto Valencia, only 3 are by women-, as well as the transformation of the exhibition format itself and of the cultural and social context”.

This initial cycle of three debates features the presence of prominent artists, researchers and curators from the art world such as Amparo Carbonell, artist and curator, Maite Garbayo, curator, and Isabel Oliver, artist, at the Centre Cultural La Nau in Valencia as part of the Women Creators cycle; the curator of artistic and educational projects, Assumpta Bassas, the artist Julia Galán and the director of MACVAC, Rosalía Torrent, on November 11 at the Llotja de Cànem in Castellón, and finally, Rosa Castells, director of MACA, Rocío de la Villa, curator, and Paloma Navares, artist, on November 23 at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Alicante (MACA).

The association Mujeres en las Artes Visuales (MAV), created in 2009, works as a non-profit organization and horizontally to achieve its main objective: to promote real and effective equality between women and men in the cultural sector and compliance with the Equality Act. To this end, it promotes collaborative work among its members, while defending their rights and common projects through feminist activism, supporting and making visible those initiatives that contribute to women being an active and empowered part of a democratic, equitable and diverse society.
